It’s official: Ugly, wobbly shoes are a menace

Not only unsightly, the toning shoes with the wobbly, Frankestein-esque heels are actually dangerous.

Consumer Reports announced that the shoes were the top complaint-getter in a database established by the Consumer Product Safety Commision in March. The fact that this footwear is dangerous is not new news.

Podiatrists have been quietly raising concerns about the shoes for years. Yet they still continue to sell well and offend our eyes at the mall.

Of the complaints on the database, 15 of 36 people reported broken bones, some of which required surgery.

The rocker design is a popular faux fitness aid and has been employed by Skechers (which received the most complaints in the database), Avia, Champion, Danskin Now and New Balance.

The madness started with the heavy marketing of positive results from wearing the expensive MBT shoes. The shoes sell for around $250 and they look so unattractive that buyers had to be convinced that they were burning more calories, targeting leg muscles and enhancing their balancing capabilities.

However, Consumer Reports says: “There’s little evidence that rocker-style shoes are more likely than other athletic shoes to promote physical fitness.”

In other words, just put on some comfortable shoes and go for a walk.

Judging from the complaints, even if the rocker shoes work a little, it can’t be worth the tendonitis or foot, leg and hip pain. Excercise is supposed to make you feel good. And let’s face it, the best way to get fit is to get moving … preferably on solid ground.
